1_7.Lake Saiko
The Lake Saiko - surrounded by mountains as well as Aokigaharajukai Woodland, and filled with light blue water. It was once called “Sea of the West”. The groundwater formed with the rainwater fallen on Mt. Fuji gushes out of the lake bottom to be the source of the lake water.
The indigenous kunimasu trout of Lake Tazawa, Akita prefecture, was believed to have been extinct around 1940. However, it was confirmed to be living here by the survey conducted in 2010. And in 1981, a dugout regarded to have been used for religious rites around late Kamakura period was discovered from the lake bottom. This is one of destinations of “Pilgrimage to Uchihakkai" for Fuji-ko adherents to practice cold water ablution in each of the eight lakes and ponds at the mountain foot.
